The CCP Loot Fleets - Naïve?

I'm not sure why CCP seems surprised over the outrage and whining that has resulted from their loot fleets. Seems the inevitable outcome to me. Any person that doesn't feel they have the skillpoints, the PvP skills, the luck of the draw (on looting ships fast enough) or the social network to form an effective enough fleet is going to scream bloody murder. They're going to feel screwed out of the prizes.

I'm not participating at all in the loot fleet battles. But I'm not crying about them either. To the people that participate go the spoils. I'm not participating because I figure I'll end up losing far more than gaining. Plus, if I did participate and didn't get any loot, I'd feel peeved about the events (just like the people who are peeved but not participating.) So, I'm not participating, I'm not feeling annoyed. It's as easy as that.

Watching from the sidelines, reading all the rage and tears on the forums, it seems to me that CCP is a tad surprised at the vehemence of the responses, as if they didn't quite anticipate the outrage. That's really quite amusing. Can they really be that naïve?

If CCP wanted to limit the outrage, create a fairer system where everyone had a chance at loot, they would have run a lottery. "Hey, everyone, we're giving away 75 PLEX. We'll randomly raffle them off to any non-trial account created and paid for before December 07 2011." Boom! Who the fuck can bitch and moan about that? (I'm sure a couple people would find a way "This favours people with multiple accounts! Waugh!", but far fewer whiners overall.)

When you want to limit whining, think socialism. (In their real lives, Americans treat socialism like it's a plague rat, but they fucking love it in their MMOs.)

  1. But hello?

They are dropping some goods, but it's a pee in the ocean of EvE economy.

The employees (not just the devs) are out there in the game having fun and letting us have fun, defending (and getting backstabbed) or shooting at them.

CCP is a company in the entertainment industry, if you're not entertained by their product or action, go find a more entertaining one.

  2. @hdw That's cool. I have no problem with what CCP are doing. But ... if they wish to lessen the anger that occurs every time they do something fun, they might have to think socialism. Lotto off good loot, and then fly around in fleets with T1 and T2 mods only. :)

  3. Essentially what you're saying is it's not a fair system. But when has EVE ever been fair? Scams? Asymmetrical combat? Non-consensual PVP?

EVE is not a socialist concept and if the solution is a lottery instead of an engaging attempt to involve players and developers in a shared experience then why not ban undocking altogether and make EVE a ship-spinning communism simulator with daily lotteries that everyone wins.

  4. @Seismic I think what they are doing is fine. I've got no problem with it.

All I'm saying, if CCP doesn't want to get screamed at when they are actually trying to have some fun with their customers, they might try giving out the good loot via a lottery ... and have their fleet fun in ships with T1 and T2 modules.

I don't care either way ... unless they do hold a lottery and I win something ... then "Fuck yeah!"

(I think it's great that CCP interacts with their customers in this way. I'm just a little sad that it has to bite them in the ass all the same. I wish people didn't have to be such dicks.)

I'm just doing the anthropological thing. I'm not on any side of the fence on this one.

The masses are fine with EVE not being fair when it is player versus player. When the company itself gets involved, the masses start to see inequity and favouritism. They start seeing aspects of T20 (even when the comparison is completely irrational.)

  6. I think that is the key lesson here and one that I'm starting to come to terms with; many people ARE dicks. Especially when it comes to communicating on the internet. The majority seem to suffer from a grossly inflated sense of entitlement coupled with a lack of respect for everyone else.

I would hope that the CCP organisers behind the event are thick-skinned enough to dismiss the inevitable whiners. If they didn't have this to complain about they'd find something else. In fact, maybe CCP realised this - knowing that the overwhelming player goodwill generated by Crucible would only placate the professional complainers for so long, perhaps this inconsequential event was designed as a kicking post to allow them to vent.

This was a cathartic community troll. I bet they all feel better now for having a good bitch. Well played CCP.

  7. @Seismic Heh heh. You may be right. You should talk about this on Sunday's podcast. You have the right demeanour to talk some good sense into people.

    >>Actually they love it IRL too. Just nobody wants to admit they're becoming those pinko-commie bastards they used to hate in the 80s. ;-)

Basically, the way people are nowadays (sadly the American media plague-rat has spread narcissism over much of the modern world), it's not "fair" unless _I_ win and am getting what _I_ want.
Perfect example: you avoid a gatecamp, or dodge someone trying to scan you down or find you in an anom, etc, or maybe just stay out of a fight you KNOW you can't win... lots of times that person will smack you and say you're a pussy, etc, when in reality you're just being smart and avoiding a "bad" situation. But you're robbing them of "their" kill, so they get pissy and whiney, call you names, etc. All part of the "fun". ;-)

Then again, I just got my first solo kill -- jumped by a SB in a lolsex anom in my Myrm. I'd finished the anom and had repped up, etc, so he was facing me at 60K EHP and 3/4 cap ... on an AC Myrm full of T2 droney goodness. He promptly went squish, but was really cool about it.

The stuff his ship dropped, he got back. Course I sold the T2 salvage from the wreck so I figure it was a fair deal. ;-) Still, there's a lot of people would've smacked him and kept the stuff or sold it... and if he'd had a shit attitude about it, I prob would've done just that.

In the end though you get a lot more out of EVE (and life) if you're just cool and down to earth with people instead of being a jackass. :-)

  9. The rich get richer but well, EVE has never been fair. Still, I hope we'll have something everyone can enjoy, I really loved the snow ball launchers for example and would like to see more like that.

  10. My point is that it's not about fairness nor any political system.

A game is something most people play to have fun (hopefully).

When people are getting their pants twisted because someone else got a random goodie in an effing game then it's time to ponder why they play that game.

    Or any game at all.

  11. do weekend hack golfers complain when tiger woods gets appearance fees for playing in the US open?

CCP is holding an event. to entertain the masses it needs to have the right mix of drama and celebrities.

without the mega loot appearance fees the PL, Goons etc wouldnt bother showing up.
