There's always gankers, sure, but there's a big difference between Hulkageddon - veterans throwing lots of resources at Hulks, organised ganking teams taking out even tanked ships, people from other game areas coming in en masse to try ganking - and the rest of the year.
I wasn't super happy with the original. As you noticed, it wasn't very clear why the player ship in Asteroids should be the miner. I've made that clearer.
