Select a jump gate or a station from the Overview, then press the D key (or select Jump/Dock from the right-click context menu) and the game is supposed to warp you to that gate or station, and then automatically jump or dock you when you reach the destination.
This functionality, when it was first released (was it with Crucible or shortly thereafter?) worked flawlessly. It was functionality I could rely on.
That is until six or so weeks ago. I'm not sure what patch broke the functionality, but break it did.
About 30% of the time now, I'll arrive at a station or a gate and nothing will happen. My ship will just sit there, until I re-input the instruction to jump or dock.
I've been told to submit a petition, but unless I can figure out why the dock/jump command is ignored, figure out how to reliably replicate the problem, it seems pointless submitting that petition. CCP isn't going to go on a wild goose chase, looking for a problem if it doesn't know where to begin the search. And I don't know where to tell them to begin the search. Unless I can replicate the problem for them consistently, the problem will be ignored, and understandably so. Bug hunting is a time-intensive task.
Obviously something happens during the warp to the destination that causes the jump/dock command to get removed from the command queue (yeah, I'm going to call it the command queue, for lack of knowing whatever it is CCP calls it internally.)
It could be any number of reasons why the jump/dock command is dropped. But so far none of the reasons I've investigated have been consistent. Alt-tabbing out of the game during the warp, sometimes I jump/dock while alt-tabbed, sometimes I do not. Maybe opening up other in-game windows (market, character, chat, whatever) drops the command, but again, it's not consistent.
(This problem has nothing to do with auto-piloting, which works quite perfectly. Although, I don't use auto-pilot on anything except my hauling alt, and then only when he's hauling 37 PLEX through Uedama.)
I want this to be a command I can once again rely upon. Three times I've been called away from the computer urgently, I select a station (in an Amarr system, of course), press D to dock. The warp begins and I leave to attend to whatever it is I have to attend to. I return an hour or so later to find my ship either still sitting outside that station, or find myself podded. Annoying, to say the least.
Maybe a reader out there has discovered how to replicate this problem consistently? I'd love to give CCP some solid direction on how to fix the issue.

It seems to be dropping a ship just out of docking radius and requesting the dock at that point. With the ship out of radius (be a meter) it does not dock. The ship then decelerates into docking/jump distance but sits there.
ReplyDeleteThis was happening with cloaked ships as well. They would not decloak fast enough for the jump command to be happy and then would sit on the gate and not jump. This was 'fixed' by causing them to 'approach' the gate/dock and then jump. I hate it because I now have a 1-3 second window where I am decloaked auto approaching the gate. They did notice that this was a problem.
The docking thing is a little bit better but it is still an issue. I no longer trust 'dock' as a warp to/dock option to get the job done.
I noticed the fix but I just do what I've always done since the feature was first introduced. I just spam the jump button when I get within 2000m of the gate. Doing that at the dock doesn't work so well.
DeleteOh, and I never trust the feature to dock my ship for me. That's something that was drilled into my head when I was in Eve University and it's stuck in my head ever since.
It happens to me EVERY time I alt-tab out to check on forums and killboards.(I don't ever use the ingame browser).
ReplyDeleteI just resigned myself to this being a new game 'feature'.
MB.
I had exactly the same issues as comment 1. The solution is to actually be paying attention and not alt tab out. If CCP are fixing missions to stop people afk'ing them then perhaps this issue is working as intended!

Pretty sure you can't really compare a warp then auto-jump/dock with AFK mission running. :)
DeleteSure you can. Like this:
Delete"Warp then auto-jump/dock is like AFK mission running"
BAM! Compared.
I'm having the same problems and have not noticed any real trend as to what might cause it. I guess if you don't want to submit a bug report saying "this is happening and I don't know how to replicate it" you might have to write down everything you do between hitting the button and docking/jumping and saving the instances when you end up not docking/jumping.
EVE Log Server will give you useful information when petitioning.

I had always this bug, even before the addition of the warp+jump option.
ReplyDeletebefore this, I had sometimes issues while clicking "jump" where doing nothing, and I had to click again. and no, I'm not talking about lag situation. With the warp+jump option, at least I know I'm not crazy, as I'm sure I have clicked this damn button, as he warp... but sometimes don't jump. Not new for me, always happened, not often, but happen. Don't play much these days, so couldn't say if it happen more often than before...
ps : dunno if you did something, but since a few days, your blog never go into mobile version on my phone while others on blogspot still work without any issue...
The mobile version should be working again. I removed it until I could figure out how to get the copyright notice displaying (a requirement of being on the EVE Online Fansite list and the media account that comes with it.) The notice is now displaying, so all is well and working (I hope.)
DeleteThe most probable culprit is a small difference between the warp-to distance and the active dock/jump radius of the targeted station or gate.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, the warp-to value used by the auto dock/jump feature isn't quite landing you within the dock/jump range of the station/gate.
Note that the active radius varies depending on the specific 3D model used for the station/gate.
I have been in game and its done this to me multiple times. It happened to me a lot flying an expensive tengu around lowsec which I wasn't happy about, but besides that fact it seemed to happen all the time to me. It would drop me out of warp and just never jump and never dock, all the time. Some of the responses make sense with the dock or jump radius depending on specific 3D model but seriously they need to fix this so I can rely on this when I'm in dangerous space.
ReplyDeleteIf you've got EVE set to Fullscreen, try changing it to Fixed Window. It's still full screen, but doesn't minimize when you alt-tab.
ReplyDeleteI don't have to alt-tab away from the window, it doesn't dock or jump when it's full screen too. If it only glitches about 30% of the time for you, consider yourself lucky. It's well over 50% for me on my toons and it started when the chat was modded to include dust bunnies. Blaming station models is 100% wrong. I'm using the same stations and gates I used prior to the patch, and now, half the time it doesn't work whereas before, I had no problems at all.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to what else gets fucked up in the game, and what they ignore like docking and jumping, while they do important shit like making sure a fucking shirt will tuck in.
It could be more than 30%. I know it's a substantial amount, but didn't want to sound hyperbolic with the number I threw out there.
DeleteIf I'm running the game in full screen mode and alt/tab to another client (or the desktop) then the client that's running in the background might fail to dock or jump (seems to happen more often with docking). Now that I'm running the game in windowed mode it doesn't happen.
ReplyDeleteIf you need to run from your PC, set destination as waypoint, initiate warp and activate the autopilot. You land at zero on the gate / station and the autopilot makes sure you actually jump / dock. I share the same issue from time to time.
ReplyDeletehappens to me all the time. lands a few 100m outside docking radius, then slowboats towards the station. it's like they want me to die.
ReplyDeleteI don't see this and I run two clients in Fixed Window mode.
ReplyDeleteI get this aswell. I run eve in a fixed window. I get non jumps thru gates about 5percent of the time. I thought it was pressing warp to by mistake, and was going senile.
ReplyDeletebeing alt-tabbed out during warp does this with great consistency for me. leads to mad window flipping when I'm moving around with both my main and my hauler (cause, if uncloaked on a gate, my hauler would get two-shotted by almost anything combat fit bigger than a frigate for a very unfortunate and embarrassing loss)
