CCP Employee of the Year

Retribution is out. There's little that is going to change between now and the end of 2012. So might as well announce the CCP Employee of the Year.

I did this last year. CCP Guard was the obvious winner in 2011, giving a human face once again to CCP. CCP needed more visiblity with the playerbase. It needed to develop its sense of humour once again. After Incarna and the Summer of Rage, it needed to build towards Crucible on a positive note. Guard brought CCP all those elements. Guard continues to bring those elements to CCP.

I've decided it's worthwhile singling out a star CCP dev every year. No prizes or other accolades. Just their name in print, in a small EVE Online-only blog that a few people read from time to time. And a few kind words about their contribution to EVE during 2012.

He's in space!
CCP Fozzie
He is the clear winner this year. He put ship rebalancing into overdrive. Whereas we were getting maybe a ship class worth of revamping per Crucible and Inferno expansion, he stepped it up three notches for Retribution. Something like 50 ships were either revamped, rebalanced or introduced. An unprecedented number.

Unless it was a comment from the biggest trolls on the EVE Online forums, nobody with any credibility has had anything negative to say about Fozzie. He's always professional and courteous when he's on the forums. He listens to the playerbase. He understands the playerbase, having been one for so long. He understands what drives this game, and has attempted to deliver in that area, whether he was balancing and revamping ships, or delivering a few new features to faction warfare.

So, who is this Fozzie guy? Most of us know him as Raivi. A long-time member of Pandemic Legion, as well as a player commentator at both Alliance Tournament IX and Alliance Tournament X. He started playing in 2008, beginning with the first incarnation of Red vs. Blue, before moving to Pandemic Legion nine months later. He's been involved with the game actively since then.

His knowledge of EVE's vast collection of ships has always been impressive. It is one of the reasons why he's been described as one of the greatest commentators any EVE tournament has ever had. He's clear, concise and always has his ducks in a row. It is why he's continued successfully as a CCP commentator during the New Eden Open.

CCP Fozzie has been the star dev this year. Everything he's touched has turned to gold. I look forward to what he accomplishes in 2013.

  1. Expect he is ruining the rest of t2 ships for like 8 years old players, since those new cruisers only take months to train and just by bring superior number, his alliance can pretty much win any fight without any strategy at all

    1. Wait to see what he does with T2 revamping before making that determination.

    2. His OLD alliance is a smaller spartan'esc group that uses tactics not numbers to achieve their goals. Not to mention his OLD alliance has some of the oldest characters in the game. So saying that boo hoo new pilots in cruisers with significant numbers can be effective, would be counter to his OLD alliance's goals. It seems to me this guy is more interested in keeping the game balanced and interesting.

    3. Strange thing is I actually had a theory that tech 1 logistics might end up significantly replace tech 2 logistics in large prolonged wars, but people generally thought the idea was nuts. Even with the disadvantages of being tech 1 I still think the cost factor as well as the ease of training for them would outweigh the advantages of being tech 2 over large prolonged wars. Most seemed to have the idea that larger alliances had infinite funds to replace such ships so you might as well go for the tech 2 version. However, we all know that the infinite isk thing is a complete myth/fairytale.

    4. '09 checking in.
Single T2 ships still outperform T1 in most situations, the main difference is that now a single high skilled pilot in a T1 can ruin a bad pilot in a T2 ship.

Forming a welp fleet of cheap ships, has always been an option. Good FC's can still destroy welp fleets for little loss.

This brings 6+ month old toon's into a good situation in low/null, they can specialise and be good at something.
Which will make them want to stay in the game.

I see no issue with this, if you are 8 years old and getting trolled by noobs then the answer is simple.
      Learn to fly.

    5. To the anonymous poster complaining about t2 ships being less good now, maybe you should refer to this diagram http://cdn1.eveonline.com/www/newssystem/media/63563/1/Flowchart.jpg before you spew your ignorant shit.

    6. @Anabaric A T1 cruiser can be flat out better than some of the T2 variants now. You either fly a T3 crusier or fly a T1 cruiser, minus the Vagabond/Zealot/(MAYBE)Muninn.

I'm not going to even mention how the Osprey is pretty much as good as a Basilisk for 3 months less training and 160M less isk. If you think blobbing was bad before, just wait until every small gang has two of these with them because they end up costing 15mil each opposed to nearly 190mil each. Elzon above me *nearly* has the right idea, they won't replace T2 logi but you can expect most tackle and EWAR in big fleets to be replaced by T1 logistics.

    7. except your osprey fit doesn't rep nearly as much, or transfer nearly as much cap.
It doesn't have a spare cap transfer to splash capacitor around a fleet.

The osprey is more viable as a logistics cruiser than it once was, but 'pretty much as good as a basilisk'?....pass the bong..

    8. Oh please. Your precious t2 ships will still have application in ~~elite pvp situations~~, its just that the formerly useless half of EVE's hulls now have proper application.

    9. Wow. How many 6 month old players do you feel entitled to murder at once in your Vaga? Why the hell should those guys keep hanging around to lose to you?

  2. Realize they are going to be balancing the T2 cruisers, faction ships, elec. attack frigs, BC's now. The T1 cruisers and logi were complete shit for a long time, they were pointless to train and not cost effective at all. Now they are closer to their t2 counter parts in cost effectiveness and usefulness, but this is not a bad thing. Eve needs new blood to stay alive, younger players having options to play support, dps, and do something other than fly a tackle frigate for almost a year is a good thing.

I'm sure once the next wave of ship balance hits, some of the t2 cruisers will be stronger. But lets be real, if you have the isk, you still get a nice advantage for bringing the t2 logi over t1. The only real area where I feel that ships are too weak for what they cost is the faction cruisers.

Many empire faction cruisers are almost the same as their t1 counterparts now. They definitely need a buff, but they've needed a rebalance for a long time. The cynabal is so much better than almost any other faction cruiser, also several of the empire faction cruisers suck in comparison to others. After seeing the amazing job they've done so far, I can't be anything but excited to see what comes next!

Also the UI changes, the aggression mechanic changes, the bounty system changes, have all been fantastic.

The only thing I would really like them to give some attention to is standings. I have not heard much about this, but there are some situations that are giving me headaches needlessly. I missioned for Minmatar in high sec for a long time, but many of my friends are in Amarr milita.

So I joined the Amarr milita to fight with them. I can't go in any empire now (they all hate me either because of my standings or the fact that I'm in enemy milita) I can't run missions for Amarr milita because I have negative 8 amarr standings. I can't run the Sisters missions, because I can't go in high sec.

So my options are either to run many thousands of level 1 missions, in FW (mind you the mission beacon appears in everyone's overview in local when I warp to them, allowing anyone else to come in and kill me or chase me out)or I leave the faction every time I want to earn isk. The income for minmatar is at least 3x more than Amarr (even if I could run lvl 4 FW missions for amarr) because they have higher tier, and also they have many more members (meaning they are not going to lose tier anytime soon) It's a really bad system that needs to be addressed.

There needs to be a reasonable way to fix standings, that doesn't include me running level 1 missions everyday for months on end. Maybe give me some nice standings increase for all the pvp I do for amarr militia! I've killed over 200 minmatar ships in under a month, but I get 0 standings with amarr for it. Also the LP payouts are complete shit, for plexing, pvp, and missions for Amarr.

I realize there needs to be incentive for taking the faction space, but it needs to be less drastic! Maybe a higher base lp payout with a 10 or 15% increase per tier, instead of it doubling per tier. The effect of the huge income disparity. is a snow ball effect. Minmatar has several times the income potential, so they get more people, control more space and make even more isk. Most of the Amarr faction guys I've talked to make their money by doing missions on alts for their enemy minmatar. This is a really stupid system and needs to be fixed.

Standings need to be easier to fix, much easier. Also, sec status is really stupid and punishes pvp. It takes days of grinding to fix.If you read this: Please fix these retarded systems Fozzie, I'm tired of being punished for PvP and I'm tired of being needlessly and drasticly inconvenienced because of my standings. It doesn't add any depth or fun to the game, it's just adds tons of boring grinding and takes a ton of time away from doing what I enjoy, flying with my friends!

  3. Fozzie was happy but found this honor to be quite amusing considering he's only been at CCP for 6 months. :)

    1. Considering how he became the face of ship balancing (and yeah, we know he didn't do it alone, but ask people who were the devs involved in ship balancing, and most will probably be able to name Fozzie and not Ytterbium or Tallest.)

Plus he did a stellar job of connecting with the community.

He did a lot in six months.

  4. Fozzie is still one of us and hasn't had a chance to be buried by the insanity of CCP yet. I hope he stays that way.

  5. Does anyone audit his eve accounts so there isn't a replay of T20 ?

I'm sorry but i have issues with any dev being in any alliance for any period of time. We are expected to trust that someone with that level of information and access is always going to be on the straight and narrow????

I get the need to play to understand the players side of the game, but I still don't care for it.
