I was always under the impression that the positioning of the stars we see in space were more or less meaningless. Except for the single stars associated with each stargate that jumps to them, that there was no particular rhyme or reason to the backdrop of stars.
Not so.
Click that image. You'll want to see it larger (or fullsize).
Viewing our destination and waypoint routes in space, mapped onto the skybox.
It's an utterly pointless new feature, without any utility mechanically, but it's also completely awesome. It becomes not so pointless with respect to immersion, giving us a sense of the space that we're in, and the relationship of other systems to our current location.
This Reddit comment by Cantripping sums it up nicely: "You know how sometimes, there are all sorts of things you wish would be worked on or improved in a game, and then the guys running it roll out a bunch of useless shit no one wants? This seems to be one of those things that no one knew they wanted until now."
This is on SiSi right now. I think we're to expect it in the Retribution 1.1 release on February 12 2013.
Good work, CCP. Whoever came up with the idea, they deserve some cake.
I will give 250M ISK to the first person who can screenshot a route (in space) that looks like a penis, including sackage. The route and your starting system are requirements.

Navigation by the Stars i'd say. Even if had no real utility yet, its still awesome for to know that stars may not indeed be just random celestials in the sky. Very cool!
ReplyDeletei have posted a video of this here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voR8OiWydhk with some of the other visual changes
ReplyDeleteI love it. It goes along with the aligned star gates and nebula as seriously cool.
ReplyDeleteYeah, its one of those things.
ReplyDeleteNo real utility value, but still really nice. A small gem.
They added the second layer of stars in the backdrop in Crucible (I think, can't remember for sure), it already featured all the nearby stars according to their distance, their luminosity, and their position on the map.
ReplyDeleteAs such most of the work was already done, so I don't think they put a lot of time in this new feature, but I agree it's a nice addition for immersion.
Indeed this is awesome.
ReplyDelete"FC, what's our route?"
"2nd star to the left and straight on till morning."
A penis, really? I would have thought a cogent Cancer-, Aquarius-, Virgo-style request would be better. And maybe some nice supporting lore just to help punt the constellations into EVE mythology.
ReplyDeleteThat is completely awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'll add 250m to your prize if the route includes:
ReplyDeletehttp://evemaps.dotlan.net/system/P3EN-E
or
http://evemaps.dotlan.net/system/4-CUM5
as a substantive part of the cock-and-balls.
With all the updates to graphics and sounds I find myself less multiboxing and more just focused on one client with all graphic and audio options enabled.
ReplyDeleteMy god...it's full of stars...
