CSM8 Campaign Season - Goonswarm Candidates

With 2013 upon us, the Council of Stellar Management campaigning begins. It will start off slow, as the various blocs start to consolidate their candidates. CSM8 season is underway.

Although CSM7 elected a Goonswarm candidate, that candidate, The Mittani, was unable to take his seat as Chairman, due to a mistake made at Fanfest 2012. CSM7 was, thus, without Goonswarm representation. That strong and guiding hand was sorely missed this year.

Goonswarm Federation [GSF] and allies are sure to field a candidate this year. Perhaps two. Based on folks I've been talking with, there seems to be one sure candidate and two other strong possibilities.

As everyone knows, the former front runner was to be Vile Rat, but world events conspired against that, and he was taken away from us all on September 11 2012. We'll never quite know what Vile Rat could have offered the playerbase through the Council of Stellar Management, but it's hard to imagine he would not have been a powerful force.

Courthouse. He became the front-runner as the next GSF CSM candidate. He was always reasonably well-known, especially after becoming Goonwaffe's Diplomatic Director, but became a true public figure during EVE Vegas. He showed himself to be bright, savvy, and with that indelible Goonswarm swagger. He is well-versed with the in-and-outs of the New Eden political scene.

The character, Courthouse, has been online since 2008. First a member of Merch Industrial in 2008, then moving to GoonWaffe in 2011. 2013 will be his fifth year in Goonswarm.

Unfortunately, he quit EVE Online last month. Life, job and family obligations have assumed most of his responsibilities. And that is as it should be. Real-life is always more important than game life. I suppose there's always the possibility that he may return to EVE Online, but likely he would still not have the time or energy to divest it towards spaceship politics. As strong a candidate as he is, he's currently out of the race. Only a hopeful at this point.

Mynnna (aka corestwo.) Is currently the front-running GSF candidate. By all accounts a very strong and able leader. Highly intelligent. The only potential drawback, he's not quite the political beast that The Mittani or Kesper North are. So whereas his game knowledge is exceptionally high, and well-regarded in the community, his ability to play the political game with CCP might cause a misstep or two. That seems to be the general perception. A strong candidate, nonetheless.

Mynnna is one of EVE's oldest active characters. Although the character dates from 2003, the current Mynnna became owner in mid-2006, immediately joining GoonFleet. He is currently the Director of Finance, responsible for tech moon sales, alliance contracts, as well as the trillion ISK bug in faction warfare back in June 2012. Mynnna loves poking holes in the system and then writing about them at themittani.com.

Kesper North. He is the CEO of Gentleman's Agreement, one of the front-line CFC allies. He's very much cut from the same cloth as The Mittani. He would likely be the front-runner, but from all indications is currently waffling on a decision to run or not. Apparently wants to be assured he has the GSF political machine behind him if he does decide to enter the race. Hard to blame him for that, though. Anyone that runs wants to win. If you have the GSF firmly in your backyard, there's little chance of losing, and a strong possibility of gaining the chairmanship.

The downside here, from a Goon perspective, is that he's not true Goon. Gentleman's Agreement is with the CFC today, but that might not be the case tomorrow.

Kesper has been playing EVE Online since 2008. Spent a year in the Majesta Empire (with Reliables Inc), and then moved permanently to Gentleman's Agreement at the beginning of 2011.

***

Arydanika. She is not a Goonswarm-sanctioned candidate. She is not a heavy-hitter within the alliance. I'm including her in the discussion, because I've seen recent comments state that if she wanted to run for CSM8, she'd be a shoe-in, considering she has nearly 10K votes behind her. This is not the case. At this time, Goonswarm votes will go to Mynnna and/or Kesper.

Arydanika is to Goonswarm Federation as Mintchip is/was to Pandemic Legion. Her value to the alliance is in smoothing the rough edges among the unwashed masses of New Eden. "Oh. Dani is in Goonswarm? Wow. I guess they mustn't be as awful as I thought." She currently hosts a popular and well-regarded podcast, Voices from the Void.

  1. I'm pretty sure the Goons wouldn't want to cast their block vote behind a non-Goon like Kesper or Dani. A blue pubbie is still a pubbie. And quite possibly won't stay blue for the full year anyway.

Was hoping you could elaborate on this? Maybe I missed something, haven't been playing much the last few months

    1. CSM6 is widely regarded as one of the most effective CSMs to date and many credit it to Mittani's leadership.

    2. I'm willing to change my mind, but CSM7 has been shit for anyone that lives in Nullsec

    3. What does that have to do with CSM7 tho? CCP had already laid out their agenda for the year as of FanFest

  3. chatlog from November 23rd (edited for clarity, corestwo is Mynnna, orginal version can be found somewhere on eve-live):

    Cookiez Yum > c2..
Cookiez Yum > you ever thought of running for csm?
Cookiez Yum > just for the sake of running
Cookiez Yum > be the markets voice !
    corestwo > well
corestwo > if I ran for CSM it would be to get elected, not for the sake of running, seeing as I could and would be able to have the entire CFC vote for me.
corestwo > and my concerns would be broad. They might include things relevant to market and industry, but would certainly not be limited to them.
Mu-Shi Ai > sounds like you're already running over there
    Cookiez Yum > but
    Cookiez Yum > you're too lazy ?
    Cookiez Yum > i guess
    Cookiez Yum > :D
volhar > best (some might say only) reason to run for CSM: free trips to iceland
Cookiez Yum > i would love that =<
corestwo > I've thought about it from time to time but I'm actually _not_ terribly enthralled with the idea of free trips to iceland.
    [...]
Avensys > only way c2 would realistically get elected would be on the goon vote
    [...]
corestwo > Plus, being on the CSM would necessarily restrict my ability to fuck with the markets.
    [...]
Avensys > maybe goons will split their votes as wide as possible given their experience with puting all eggs into one basket
    [...]
Elmo Zumwalt > i could see him getting banned when trying to use insider information to make a profit
corestwo > You might be surprised, Avensys, but thanks to the goon vote my ability or lack thereof to get votes outside the cfc would be largely irrelevant
    [...]
corestwo > in any case the "eggs in one basket" thing was mostly just to prove a point etc, and yes it wound up biting us in the ass. We easily could put two candidates on the council if we wanted to though.
    [...]
Avensys > yeah, my speculation was that you might attempt the opposite - as another show of power
    corestwo > /emote shrugs
Avensys > get as many people on the CSM as you can
corestwo > well I mean we certainly _could_ megastack the vote for me. I don't get drunk enough to make an ass of myself like mittens did.
Avensys > as far as I know your internal polls have been pretty accurate
Avensys > so you have the tools to split the vote without risking too much
corestwo > we obviously have some difficulty accounting for non-goon/non-cfc votes but that's easily overcome by simply ensuring that we receive enough votes from within our ranks, yes.
corestwo > I'm not sure we could swing more than two members. A fair number of the 10k mittens got _were_ from non-cfc after all.
Vaerah Vahrokha > for some reason I can't seem to see GS cabal members getting on CSM. It's like pirates became official cops or similar
Avensys > I guess that does raise an interesting concern
    [...]
corestwo > on the contrary, who better than someone who knows at least a large portion of the game inside and out?
Avensys > why lock yourself out from an aspect of gameplay that you enjoy?
corestwo > it'd be a given that I'd have to reign in my own activities, of course, which
    corestwo > exactly
corestwo > and its not like I could safely leak information to the others in the cabal as well
corestwo > as thanks to the forex incident CCP knows exactly who they are
    corestwo > :p
    [...]
corestwo > in any case between that and no real desire to actually go to iceland, a CSM run is unlikely.
    [...]
corestwo > especially seeing as I can achieve most of the same goals by just being an available advisor to whichever goon we _do_ put on the csm.

    2. She wants to see Iceland, I take it.

    3. No. Well, maybe, but we can't necessarily afford for her to go. But she thinks me sitting on the CSM would be "neat".

    4. Problem solved. You submit her passport and name as Mynnna the candidate, the person who will travel to Iceland. You actually do all the heavy-politicking the rest of the year.

      Delete
    5. Well CCP would certainly find themselves wondering why "Mynnna" showed so much sudden interest in their server infrastructure, real-time data monitoring, and so on. Wife's a software engineer, you see.

Your captcha thing is really obnoxious when drunk, by the way. Thought you should know.

Terrible terrible things are said about me daily. I reserve the right to delete them.

Those people can still be assured that I have read them, even if they earn no brownie points with the general public.

    1. Not at all.

I just figured the previous Dani post served its purpose. No need to keep dredging it up. I did consider linking it, but figured there wasn't a need. And I didn't want anyone to think I was mentioning Dani simply so that I could link to the post again.

It's already in the sidebar due to its popularity. And it'll be a thing next December due to the number of comments.

  6. corestwo gets my vote. One of the few Goons who posts intelligently on the forums, rather than just being a troll.

CSM6 was indeed successful, not because of Mittens' leadership, but because he was personally committed to doing the job right - and did most of the work, with the help of a few others. The majority of the members of CSM6 were no more, no less active than members on any other CSM.
